Okay that was a really bad pun in the title.
But it's my way. Mr. Peabody, your death shall not have been in vain!
But I digress...
Back in May, I had a little blurb for you on Britney Spears denying that she would be playing Janis Joplin in Penelope Spheeris' biopic, The Gospel According to Janis. Rumors had surfaced after pop star Pink had dropped out of the project.
Now we finally have a real update on casting news from Variety, who reports that Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy star Zooey Deschanel will be taking on the role for the film, which has undergone a major overhaul since Pheeris' co-writer, David Dalton, came on board.
Dalton was assigned to write a story on Joplin that compared her troubled life and career to that of Judy Garland, and he even accompanied Joplin on tour to that end. Perhaps taking a cue from Almost Famous, Dalton's story is now the central plot of the film, and an actor will be cast to play his part soon enough.
After Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon ruined it for everyone by singing so masterfully in Walk the Line, now anyone who's anyone has to do their own singing in any musician's biopic. Deschanel has hired a vocal coach to help her destroy her vocal chords in order to sound like Joplin, who, to my ears, sounded like a cat being skinned by a lawnmower while having forced sex with a buffalo.
But maybe that's just me.
