So my boyfriend Jake discovered Speed Racer last year when he and Tippen raided Tippen's RA's room for snacks. They found some DVDs and that snack raid introduced Jake, Tippen and myself to an interesting cultural facet.
Japanese people are wack!
Speed Racer makes like no sense, and it's all so random and hyperactive. My favorite moment from any of the shows we watched was when Speed and Trixie are in some Middle Eastern villain's hotel and when Speed gets all up in his face, the Middle Eastern dude commands his whole staff to kill Speed Racer. So like the WHOLE staff totally pulls machine guns out of their coats and room service carts and goes after Speed. It is totally random and totally spastic, but really fun.
Oh and then there's also the racing, and the crazy car tricks. Like this bad team of car racers actually stack their cars on top of each other during a race. Speed's awesomo car the Mach 5 had SAW BLADES HIDDEN INSIDE! It makes no sense!
And Speed's girlfriend is named Trixie. That's disgusting and funny.
So shit, there's a story here. And it is this: The Wachowski Brothers are rumored to be linked to the long in development Speed Racer movie. Yeah, I know. Who cares? It kind of sucks that the last two Matrix movies were like getting a style from an epileptic, but even though the dialog and plots were like totally sucky, you have to admit the action was not only well choreopraphed, but was beautiful to watch. Imagine a Speed Racer movie with all the velocity and drama of that freeway chase from the second Matrix movie. Yeah, come on. That would be a work of spastic, hyperactive and random wonder. I just hope the movie isn't all race, because some of the best parts of the show are all the ridiculous intrigue Speed finds himself in.
So right now this is all rumor. Vince Vaughn sold a pitch for a Speed Racer movie a couple of years ago where he would play Racer X, who is secret Speed's brother Rex who ran away from home many years ago. Not one is sure yet if this means he's out of the loop or if he puffed up big enough where he couldn't fit through doors to go to production meetings, but according to IGN Filmforce, no one is confirming anything. But the Wachowskis have long been fans of Japanese Animation and pop-heroes like Speed, so this actually seems like a pretty good marriage of talent and material. To me anyway. But what do I know? I'm a dang cheerleader.
And Wachowskis, listen up. You have GOT to put that Evil Middle Eastern Villain Hotel scene in the movie. It's gold!
