'Vice' Scores Big, 'Pirates' Walks Plank

BEWARE THE UNIBROW!Well this is somewhat of a surprise, but a pleasant one.  Miami Vice managed to knock Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest off it's holier than thou pedestal where it has been mocking competitors like M. Night Shyamalan for several weeks.  Miami Vice managed to smuggle over $25.2 million dollars out of box offices all over the country giving the movie a good start at a successful box office run this summer.  What really surprises me about this?  Miami Vice is rated R!  And it's not even a weenie rated R movie.  It actually has some great violence and headshots!

Pirates still managed to make $20.5 million dollars this weekend, and the movie is still the most successful of the year even without any headshots.  The also headshot free Ant Bully, which opened up this weekend too, was crushed under the bloated sole of Joe Moviegoer by opening at number 5 with a paltry $8 million dollars.  It didn't even manage to rob Monster House's lunch money, which managed to remain hauntingly bouyant in 4th place with $11.5 million dollars.

Coming in third place is a movie I haven't even heard of:  John Tucker Must Die!  At first I thought this was one of those weird Tyler Perry movies, but it turns out that it's about teen girls seeking revenge on a two-timing scoundrel jock at their high school.  If anyone has seen it, does their eventual revenge involved floggings, forced humiliation or a high degree of anal intrusion?  I'd like to know before committing to see it.  The movie surprised pundits by claiming $14 million this weekend.

The real loser of the week has to be poor poor M. Night Shyamalan whose Lady in the Water tanked 61% from its opening weekend.  The free fall placed the movie 7th with an estimated $7 million dollars.  Looks like M. Night is learning the pain of a high degree of anal intrusion himself.

This past weekend's new releases in the UK were...

Cars
Stay Alive
Renaissance
Angel-A
Warrior King
Omkara

I'm slightly torn here, over what's gonna score big, but I expect Cars will take over the #1 spot from Pirates, and everything else just slides down one, with The Break-Up at 3, Superman at 4 and Stormbreaker at 5. There's nothing else on the list that I feel will draw any much of a crowd, maybe the gawd awful Stay Alive dropping in at 9 or 10.

As for next week, with
The Ant Bully
Paper Clips
Miami Vice
C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America
Three Times
The Notorious Bettie Page
My Super Ex-Girlfriend

all being released, I expect The Ant Bully and Miami Vice to enter at a lower position than My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Which annoys me. Cause My Super Ex-Girlfriend sucks.

i saw the bettie page movie

it was produced by HBO and it shows. it looks a lot like one of their tv movies, but with a theatrical release. was entertaining enough though... especially if you think gretchen moll is hot and want to see her naked.

Gretchen Moll Naked

Sigh... it always comes down to that, doesn't it?

i didnt know it going in to the movie though...

but yeah, the movie was ok... it was hard to tell how well gretchen actually did since most everyone in the world has no idea what bettie page was really like.
