This one actually caught me off guard. I consider myself no fan of movies about gang violence. Yes, I am that snobby and holier-than-thou. It could be why I don't have many friends, but I choose to believe in a world where real-life criminals aren't glorified. There have been some great movies about LA gangs, but to me, those movies don't glorify or justify those people's lives. Instead that almost act as tales of warning about a dangerous lifestyle that in incontrollable.
Enter Tyrese in Waist Deep. Tyrese plays a two-time loser who is going away for life if he gets one more mark on his rap sheet. He can't do that because he has a moppet to take care. Tyrese's life gets turned upside down when he is carjacked, and the thief makes off with not only the car, but the moppet. The kiddo falls into the hands of vicious gangster, Big Meat, who charges Tyrese with coming up with 100 Large as a ransom for his son. These leads Tyrese and female lead Meagan Wood back into the criminal world robbing banks in order to get the money.
The trailer looks great! Tyrese is a likeable enough actor, and the high concept plot of the film is a nice departure from your standard tough guy gang flicks. The trailer actually has me hoping Tyrese gets the kid back, keeps the girl and somehow avoids a life sentence in the Penn! You can check out the trailer at the Rogue Pictures website. Plus, the villain is named BIG MEAT! Let's think about that for half an hour or so.
