Trailers of the Week: 28/07-04/08

The first trailer I will discuss is for Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, which stars Kirsten Dunst and Coppola's cousin, Jason Schwartzman. After having watched the trailer, I honestly don't know what to think. Either there has been a terrible marketing disaster, or this film can be the first serious misfire in Coppola's career. What was going on? It seems to be a period story, but told with a modern twist? What's this contemporary rock music playing? Is this really going to be a teenage romantic comedy film as it appears from the trailer?

I don't know, perhaps I'm judging too much, but for now She's All That with wigs is not very attractive to me. The trailer is available from Apple in different formats. North Americans can judge for themselves on October 13.

The trailer for Hollywoodland looks slightly more interesting, and has a cast of normally strong actors, including Bob Hoskins in a potentially delicious villain role, the wonderful Diane Lane, whose work in Unfaithful is a must see, Adrien Brody, whose fame I simply do not understand, and Ben Affleck, who appears to have found a very endearing role as one of the most famous "Supermen" of all time!

I think this film can be very helpful to the evolution of Affleck's career, but I am not expecting much else. The detective story seems to be back in fashion, but if I had to choose I would rather see Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia, which I wrote about HERE.

The trailer for Hollywoodland is also available at Apple, and the film will be released on September 8 in North America.

Just when you were thinking that it was time for another Ben Stiller comedy, another Ben Stiller comedy is announced with a trailer! Night at the Museum appears to be aimed at children in the subject matter, but somehow the trailer is made as though it will be a teen comedy? Honestly, it looks like a cheap version of Jumanji, and if you had any doubt, Robin Williams is in the film as well. Other actors featured in the film include Mickey Rooney and Dick Van Dyke. If you had been wondering where they'd been, well HAHAHA, they've been at the museum!

Flixen Carla Gugino will play Ben Stiller's generic girlfriend, and the trailer seems to reveal two celebrity cameo appearances (at least I am guessing that they are cameos)... one expected, the other not so much.

The film opens in North America on December 22, and the trailer can be watched at Apple. They should pay me for all of this promotion.

The trailer for Babel has been available online for quite some time now, but last week Apple released a high definition version of it. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's (Amores Perros, 21 Grams) latest film stars an international group of actors, which includes Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Koji Yakusho (The Cure).

Inarritu's personal screenwriting genius, Guillermo Arriaga, is back with his non-linear approach. With the exception of 21 Grams, I thought his stories have been getting better with each film, so for me Babel is definitely something I will be looking forward to!

The film will be released in selected North American theaters on October 27.

I watched all of this trailers today, Hollywoodland really intrigues me, and I'm dying to see Babel. Night At The Museum does look like fun, and it has Owen Wilson, and you know the rule*:

1 frat-pack member= bad movie (My Super Ex-Girlfriend)
More than 1 frat-pack member= good movie (Old School)

I was really confused by the Marie Antoinette trailer page, with the Sex Pistols "never mind the bollocks"-esque logo. I've read reviews calling it poor in film mags, but for the first time, the film has my attention.

*=not really a rule, but general guideline. ;)
