The Worst Remake Idea Ever!

What do one American and two Chinese film celebrities have in common? According to Dark Horizons, all three will be involved in a remake of Japanese film classic, and one of the greatest films of all time, The Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai).

The celebrities in question are Donnnie Yen, Zhang Ziyi and George Clooney.

From Dark Horizons:

Yen met with Harvey Weinstein last week to discuss the remake of the 1954 action film directed by Japanese master Akira Kurosawa. According to a spokesperson for Mandarin Films, which represents the actor, "Donnie has met Harvey Weinstein in Cannes to discuss the project, we don't know more details as it is still at an early stage".

But why? The Seven Samurai has already inspired at least seven loose remakes over the past five decades (IMDB). Is this going to be loose remake number eight, or more of a direct remake, as we have usually been receiving? And why Chinese actors? Was Memoirs of a Geisha that successful? Japanese cinema has been very healthy for many years, and they have many wonderful actors to choose from.

I don't understand the world anymore, but I am sure this remake will earn lots of money for Harvey Weinstein.

George Clooney!? I love this man very much, and he has been making some excellent films over the past few years, but if he is going to be anything like Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai, some kind of Western savior for the "brutish Asian savages," then I will vomit.

Yes, I will vomit.

Of course it's still early to judge what they are thinking of, but I fear the worst.

the anime retelling was pretty good

samurai 7. i was scared to see that at first, but i gave in and loved it. in case you havent see it, then it was just a retelling with giant robot samurai as the bandits. it still centered around farmers hiring samurai and the ever important rice... which was odd, but it still managed to work for the story. about half way through the series, all the events from seven samurai have played out and it goes off into a new bit about politics... they do add in a few characters to 'anime it up', but for the most part they do help with the retelling. the biggest problem i had at first was the fact that they made kikuchiyo a robot. he did grow on me though. i dont think i could stand a straight remake of this movie, but if they were to change it up like this anime series did.. then it wouldnt be so bad.

I agree, seekshelter

I usually enjoy films where filmmakers pay homage to their influences or peers, but if that were the case here, I wonder why they would announce it as a remake.

Thank you for the synopsis/opinion on Samurai 7, I will keep an eye out for it!

I think they might just want kurosawas name on it.

hopefully, with the addition of clooney the intended chinese cast, they will change the setting. i agree with the whole tom cruise thing. that whole movie played out exactly like you would expect it too.

The Magnificent Seven

Believe it or not, I thought that was a remaked that really worked well.  Then again, I'm sort of a sucker for westerns, if you can believe it.
