Back in June the MILF told you about how Paramount shelved Tim Burton's Believe, based on the life of Robert Ripley of Ripley's Believe It Or Not! and starring Jim Carrey, and gave the greenlight to Burton's Sweeney Todd, based on the musical by Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical, starring none other than Johnny Depp.
Paramount's Dreamworks studio has confirmed that the film about the "Demon Barber of Fleet Street" has just started production, confirming that yes, Tim Burton IS directing and Johnny Depp IS starring. Have we ever heard Johnny Depp sing? This may be a first.
This will be the sixth pairing of Burton and Depp, having already been joined at the hip for Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, The Corpse Bride, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. One thing is for certain, when these two get together, you can be sure something interesting will happen!
Depp has reportedly said in the past that he "would do anything" Burton wanted him to do. "Have sex with an ardvaark... I would do it," the quote goes. Burton has called Depp "the best fainter in the business."
I'll be curious to see who gets cast as Sweeney's partner in crime, currently being played by Patti LuPone in the Broadway revival of the show now, which will conveniently end its run this Fall as production on the film is underway.
Should we take bets on who will be the leading lady? Helena Bonham Carter, anyone?
And how much do you want to bet that Danny Elfman will be involved somehow... despite the fact that Sondheim's already written everything! Just watch...
