Reviews are starting to come in from Cannes for Richard Kelly's follow up to Donnie Darko. It's called Southland Tales and it stars The Rock and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Word is that this 160 minute opus falls flat in every way. From Routers:
The film strives to rank alongside such classics as "Brazil" and "Blade Runner" but falls more into the category of "Mars Attacks!" and "1941," and box office potential will rely on very tolerant young audiences.
And people are "surprised".
Now, I'm not.
For all you Darko lovers out there, that spend all your precious time pouring over the movie, trying to decipher meaning out of every frame - i've got a newsflash for you. It's a load of shit.
Last year, in English class, we were studying "Symbolism in Literature". One thing we had to do was to write a poem, and use metaphor and symbolism to get our point across. So what did I do? I wrote the most ridiculous, meaningless, verbose POS I could think of... And I got an A+
My point? Richard Kelly has nothing of substance to say, so he just makes up a bunch of meaningless crap. And YOU ALL BUY IT. JUST LIKE MY IDIOT ENGLISH TEACHER.
For the love of god, THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES.
I'm not saying he's going to be a bad filmmaker, let him grow up a little, let him tell stories that are actually routed in something, instead of what he's doing now which is "trying to be an important filmmaker".
In the meantime, stop buying every version of Donnie Darko that comes out on DVD, and go outside and get some sun.
It's Victoria Day. You should be at the cottage.
