Imagine the Spirit, great comic book creation of lamentably deceased genius Will Eisner, turning to his faithful Negro sidekick Ebony White and asking, "What are you retarded?"
Well now that it has been announced that comic book phenom and co-director of the totally bitchin' Sin City, Frank Miller has been chosen to direct a Spirit movie, we may get that scene I described above. Which is really a scene from Batman and Robin All Stars or something. Batman says it to Dick, like 3 minutes after Dick's parents are killed.
So anyway, on with the show. This info was announced at SanDiegoComicCon today where my friend Jeff is probably walking around like Hawkeye or something. The film is going to be financed by Odd Lot Entertainment, so this is technically going to be an indie production, which is fine. As some of you know Frank Miller had a close relationship with Will Eisner, and even published a book called Eisner-Miller, which I am just going to go out on a limb here and say it was about the two of them... together.
The Spirit was created at the beginning of the whole super hero influx of the late 30s and early 40s. He's considered by many to be "the only real middle class crime-fighter". The Spirit, otherwise known as Denny Colt, had no powers, but his love of his neighborhood and him wanting to protect it from corrupt politicians, corrupt cops, corrupt dog-catchers, corrupt hookers and nazis.
No production date is set for the film, but hopefully it will get rolling soon. Miller explains at the Hollywood Reporter, that although there will be no specific period for the film, the Spirit movie will take place in a noirish comic book reality. So I am thinking like Sin City, but not nearly as desaturated of colors and stuff.
