So far, only two films have emerged from the Toronto International Film Fest with distribution deals from major distributors. Yesterday, we told you about Verhoeven's WWII sex romp, Black Book (Zwartboek). The other film is The Pleasure of Your Company, a comedy from writer-director Michael Ian Black, who you may know from NBC's Ed, or any one of the VH1 "I Love the ..." episodes.
In the film, Jason Biggs plays a man who dresses up as Cupid to propose to his girlfriend, and ends up scaring her to death. Eventually he decides to give romance another shot, encountering more speedbumps along the Road to Love.
Black's irreverent, sarcastic style of comedy shines in the film, and MGM appreciates it enough that they went and bought up all the North American distribution rights, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
"Black is an extremely gifted writer-director who has created a romantic comedy with which many can relate," said MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands, who announced the deal. "It is films like this which we will continue to acquire as we work to broaden MGM's slate of films."
The film's cast is rounded out by Isla Fisher, Edward Herrmann, Joe Pantoliano, Joanna Gleason, Margo Martindale and Rob Corddry.
