I have something to confess to our readers, and I guess to management too. This is a controversial subject. I am not even sure if this is the proper venue for what I am about to share. Dang, this might get me fired or expelled or in the case of Leather Lassy, totally spanked. But I feel the subject is just too important to avoid. Please forgive me for what I am about to impart. Oh here goes…
…Okay, what I want to say is this: Out of all the movies that were released in 2005, I think Into the Blue might be the most criminally underrated movie released in American theaters. Whew, it feels good to get that out in the open. If you need a reminder about what Into the Blue is, take a gander at this:
Yes, that’s right. The movie where Paul Walker can hold his breath longer than Aquaman is underrated. And no this isn’t because I think Paul Walker is dreamy in a vacuous and harmless way. Although he is.
I actually found Into the Blue to be a really fun adventure/caper movie. The story contains many surprises and kind of gets freaky violent at the end. Which, you know, totally freaked me out. What elevated the movie about standard beefcake fluff was the fact that everyone in the movie was a different shade or morality. Hardly anyone finishes the film with their hands clean, and the movie was way pretty to look at. Taking pictures underwater is probably really tough and Into the Blue did it really well.
So why tempt my future with this admission now? Well Into the Blue’s director, John Stockwell has picked his next project. Stockwell also directed the excellent Blue Crush and alien-head romance Crazy/Beautiful. Empire Online has the details, but the gist is this: Teenagers in Iowa decide to cultivate and sell marijuana. The movie is going to be called Kid Cannabis and it sounds like it might do for the illegal drug trade what Varsity Blues did for football. Um, I don’t really know what that means.
The story sounds interesting because I think most of the known universe is pretty sick of drug movies that focus on minorities and the inner city. Unfortunately, Paul Walker is too old to play a teenager anymore, so Stockwell will have to find some other hunk to play the Iowa farm-boy lead.
