Back in my review of the X-Men: The Last Stand DVD, I forgot to mention that we get a sneak preview of 20th Century Fox's Night at the Museum.
Which is no big deal really, because it looks horrible! When you read that, pronounce it "HAAAARRIBLE" to get the full effect.
The plot is thinner than my veneer of civility when dealing with my ex-husband. Ben Stiller stars as a security guard who works in a museum where everything comes alive at night, from the skeleton of a T-Rex, to marauding Huns, to a wax figure of Teddy Roosevelt that looks and sounds strikingly like Robin Williams. Maybe Madame Tussaud was trying to cut costs and reused the mold from the Comic Relief exhibit.
To make matters worse... the film is directed by Shawn Levy, who gave us The Pink Panther remake. Well, Europeans should love it, at least.
Honestly, the movie just looks terrible... a throwback to that terrible time in the late 80s when directors like Spielberg, Landis, Dante, and Zemeckis were completely unchecked, and created some of the most self-indulgent "the toys come alive" dreck ever. You know what I'm talking about. Don't pretend it didn't happen.
And yet.... there is hope.
The film is written by Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant... names you might recognize as writers/actors on MTV's The State, or Comedy Central's Viva Variety and the hilarious Reno 911, where they also played Lt. Jim Dangle and Deputy Travis Junior, respectively. Perhaps the trailer was put together by knuckleheaded marketing monkeys who know nothing of the duo's comedic genius, and think that Ben Stiller is still a box office draw.
So if you want to see this film, you can enjoy it on IMAX screens, as it will have a simultaneous IMAX release along with standard screens on December 22. Check out Variety for the skinny.
