Heroes Discussion Thread

Monday nights... that means it's time for NBC's Heroes, the network's most successful new show this year.

Love it?  Hate it?  Ambivalent?  Like the concept but hate the acting?  Ahem.

This is the place to discuss your thoughts on each episode as it airs.  Expect spoilers, for those of you tuning into the discussion without having seen the most recent episode, so read at your own risk.

When last we tuned in, Claire had awakened on the coroner's table, in the midst of a full autopsy... chest carved open... I have no doubt her healing factor will easily patch up that bit of nastiness.  I'm more curious as to how she'll get out of there without raising any eyebrows!

Issue #6

Well damn, does this show chafe my knickers. On the one hand, it sucks SO bad... on the other, it's really cool. I hate it AND love it.

Part of the problem is that aside from Hiro, and possibly Claire, there aren't any real likable characters.

Although tonight a thought occurred to me that I hadn't thought of before... is the artist painting the future, or is he MAKING the future happen from what he paints? His comments about how he can stop NYC from blowing up make me wonder just what his power is.

And the FX are all over the map, which drives me crazy. Claire's autopsy looked cool until she coughed and you could see that her "ribcage" was just a flat foam rubber appliance glued onto her chest... terrible effect. Almost as cheap as the shots of her driving the car. I almost expected to see some fake dry-ice fog blow by.

And then, just when I'm ready to give up on the show...

... the ending with Hiro in the subway... BEST. MOMENT. EVER!

I hate/love this show.

I'm with Druuna

I'm finding the writing VERY uneven on this show.  Although I do like that we're finally getting to see more of Peter's power as a copycat (i.e. like Calvin Rankin ("the Mimic") in the original X-Men comic), which potentially makes him the most powerful if they all get together in a group at some point.

And I liked that Hiro line to Peter at the end... "you look different without your scar."

Must have been one heck of a cut.

Yeah...

It is a bit up and down, but I think they've got me hooked with the recurring symbol that keeps popping up. I want to know what it means.

I guess they even copied that from Lost...

im not gonna say i hate it...

but i have given up on it. im with druuna on the likeable characters... id watch a whole show of hiro exploring his powers... i think i mentioned that a while back in some article... that i would probably like it more if each week they showed the story of one person..so they could flesh out the character..and then slowly introduce them to each other...

The thing is...

there weren't very many "Heroes" in last night's episode.  You've got Peter's brother, whatsisname, who used his "flying" ability to cheat on his wife ("did you ever wish you could fly?" CHEE-ZEE), you've got Hiro, who cheated in Vegas, and you've got Claire who did a service to young cheerleaders everywhere by ramming some guy through a brick wall.  Oh, and you've got the blond chick who used her power to seduce whatsisname.  And the only way the artist can use his power apparently is if he's high on "the horse".

The only one who didn't use his power nefariously was Peter, and that's only because he's so dumb and clueless he doesn't know WHAT is going on.

I still liked Hiro's appearance at the end.

Could be really good.

If they could just stop having really dumb moments like Hiro and his buddy not doing the SCREAMINGLY OBVIOUS thing and having the English speaker leave messages with the artist.

I thought I'd gotten over my shouting at the screen days...

hiro coming back speaking english....

seemed like a cop out... i dont mind subtitles in prime time...

Another Lost moment they stole.

Hiro speaking English reminded me a lot of the dream sequence they crowbarred into Lost, seemingly just they could use a clip of Jin speaking flawless English in the season 2 teaser trailer.

Peter's Power

I'm not sure Peter is a simple copycatter, like The Mimic, as the Movie MILF mentioned... With Hiro coming back and speaking english, I'm beginning to think that Peter has more empathic powers as well, i.e. it's not so much that he gets that person's power, it's almost as if he becomes that person in a way.

I'm also thinking that Niki's alter ego is actually her convict husband (or is he just the father of her boy?).  Micah seems to know more about her than she realizes, i.e. the comment about her internet activities, and he made that comment about knowing where his father was hiding and that "they" wouldn't find him.  She also said to the thug in the elevator "if you ever threaten OUR son again..."

Then again, Niki went back into the hotel room to have sex with Nathan, so unless Micah's father is gay or bi, there might be a few holes in that theory.

Micah

A kid knowing more about their parents internet activities than the parent thinks they do? I don't think that's anything exceptional...

Nina, was it the fact that he understood Hiro that makes you think that Peter's powers might be more empathic? I just assumed that Future Hiro had learnt to speak English so he wouldn't have to rely on his friend for delivering important messages like 'There's gonna be a nuclear bomb attack!'

I hope his power is more of the Mimic variety. Should make things interesting when (I'm only guessing here) he comes up against Silas, who from the House of the Flying Cutlery way he kills people, seems to have telekinetic powers.

And if that doesn't happen, I'll just draw my own comic book version of it in which it does. I'll have to draw it all in purple crayon, because that's the only flavour that I don't like...

The crazy mumbling guy

Who brushes past Mohinder when he's trying to speak to Peter's brother. I suspect we'll be seeing more of him again in the future. I just hope he wasn't talking about aliens. I got a bit of a 'aliens disguised as humans' vibe from Clair's father and his power blocking friend.

Hiro's english

He didn't look that much older... more like from an alternate timeline.  So I figured there would be no way he'd be able to gain such a mastery of the language with no trace of an accent in such a short timespan, hence the assumption that Peter was "hearing" him speak English because Peter actually was understanding the Japanese, a la the scene with Jin and Hurley from Lost, as you so adeptly pointed out.

If I could stop time...

I'd be aging real slow as well. I'd also be tempted to stop time while talking to somebody, keep it stopped long enough to grow a couple of days worth of stubble and then resume the conversation and see if they noticed.

I'd also cheat in a much less obvious fashion in casinos...

But I do see your point about Hiro not having a trace of an accent.

Druuna's picture
If you could stop time...

...wouldn't you be aging faster?

Instant Karma's picture
You're right.

D'oh!

seekshelter's picture
aging faster??? how long are you intending to stop time???

all you really need is like 2 minutes to walk in and out of the bank...

Nina Kincaid's picture
I'd like to know...

...just how powerful Hiro is... how long can he stop time?  Is he really stopping time or is he accelerating himself so fast that time seemingly stops around him?

Powers

That's one of the things that I always liked about the X-Men, and something which I think was done well in the movies too... that the younger mutants have to learn to control and explore the limits of their powers, while the older mutants, i.e. Magneto and Xavier, have mastered their powers, and are like artists at the canvas.

Hiro Rocks

Did ya'll catch the latest issue? I LOVE Hiro... the writing for his story arc is really good. It's nice to see the FX improving too... Nathan's flying stint looked pretty good. Way better than the first episode. I liked the sonic boom he left in his wake.

Nina Kincaid's picture
I agree

Although the uneven nature of the show still irks me... when it's bad, it's very bad.  But then there is so much good as well.  There's no inbetween with this show.

Instant Karma's picture
Hiro is cool

And with the speed with which he seemed to go from no English to a handful of phrases in the diner, the version of him that appeared in the subway might not be all that far in the future.

I really wish they'd lose the voice over at the start though....
