Okay, how did I not know about this sooner? This is insane. Absolutely insane... But I LOVE it!
A musical based on Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series is coming to Broadway. That's right... Evil Dead: The Musical will hit The Big Apple in October, after being workshopped in Toronto and Montreal. Those crazy Canucks... did The Lord of the Rings musical debacle teach you nothing?
But you know what? I think this one is going to work! The problem with the Lord of the Rings was that it took itself much too seriously. I see this as being more along the lines of a Spamalot... you know... one of those whacky musicals that turns Broadway on its ear. I love a little bit of anarchy with my theater these days, after all of those countless snooty and preachy shows like Rent. God, what a piece of crap that was. "Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes" my perfectly-toned ASS! That's how long it seemed like I waited for that dreck to finish.
According to Variety, the show was created by George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond and Frank Cipolla, and will be co-directed by Hinton Battle, perhaps known to TV audiences as "Sweet," the demon from Buffy's musical episode.
Following the film’s main story, but focusing on a group of friends and not just Ash (wouldn't it be great if Bruce Campbell makes some sort of an appearance in the show?) who unleash the evil in the Book of the Dead in the cabin in the woods....
And staying true to its origins, the musical will play at 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights, with the first few rows labelled, get this... THE SPLATTER ZONE!
Take THAT, toffee-nosed Broadway snobs! My oldest son will love this show... perhaps a trip to NYC is in order for the Fall.
