I actually bought a ticket to see Cars on Friday. It was my earnest attempt to broaden my reviewing skills. I really had no interest, but for the sake of you, beloved and much loathed reader, I was going to see the movie and then write up my thoughts in critical form. But something happened. I found myself surrounded by all these kids--snot-fingered, plump and manic kids. I felt like Agent Smith in the Matrix movies. I felt surrounded by this tsunami of virii, and I--I just couldn't. So I got a refund for my ticket and ended up spending the evening getting lushed with a weird consortium of celebs at a new restaurant in West Hollywood. But all during my Friday night fun time I thought of Cars and what I might have missed.
Fortunately, Cars didn't need my $1,450 dollars (the price of an adult ticket in LA-proper these days). The movie did quite well without my hard earned pain money. The Hollywood Reporter has the details, but Cars managed a significant $62.8mil this weekend, which didn't break any records, but still makes director John Lasseter happy since it's his largest opening to date.
What has me more excited than Cars solid debut is the fact that at this point in the year, X-Men: The Last Stand is the highest grossing film of 2006 and the first movie of the year to crash right through to $200mil.
