"AVP" Sequel Doesn't Sound Promising

The Hollywood Reporter has some news about Alien vs. Predator: Survival of the Fittest, that leaves me with a pit in my stomach.  But first, the good news:

Shareeka Epps, who recently gave a great performance in Half Nelson, has joined the cast to play Kendra, the older sister who must protect her younger brother.  John Ortiz (Jose Yero in the recent Miami Vice) will play a recently elected town sheriff, and Johnny Lewis of The O.C. fame, will play Ricky, a troubled youth.

Now the bad news...

First off, the title.  Ugh.

Secondly, the script is written by Shane Salerno, who gave us Armageddon.

Thirdly, the plot involves the inhabitants of a small town who must come together to fight off a predator and a horde of aliens.

Ridley Scott's Alien is one of my all-time favorite science fiction movies.  He created an absolutely believable world that had an intelligence to it that is all but lost on modern science fiction of the last 25 years.  Aliens was what it was... another James Cameron Rambo/Viet-Nam flashback, but it worked and at least expanded the world created by Scott.  I even liked David Fincher's Alien 3, which isn't nearly as bad as everyone seems to think, especially considering what happened with the production of that film.  And Alien Resurrection was, well... to be honest I'm not sure WHAT that was... but it at least promised us the unleashing of Alien hell on Earth at the end.

AVP was a huge disappointment... even bigger than Resurrection, and the news on the sequel just does not sound good.
