The Hollywood Reporter has a great article about Roger Avary, who I always want to call Roger Aviary for some reason. The article's main focus is on Avary's participation with the upcoming adaptation of Silent Hill, which see release here in the states on April 21--a date that cannot get here fast enough for me. The article is a pretty interesting read as it discusses Avary and director Christophe Gans' desire to make the movie for the fans of the game, since they are both fans themselves. This would be a Hollywood first, by the way. Avary gives a great explanation as to why Hollywood adaptations of video games have, for the most part, sucked like a 2 dollar hooker:
"Hollywood writers are getting younger," Avary says. "The old-timers who don't play games are writing less and less of movies of this sort. There are more younger people who grew up with gaming getting opportunities in Hollywood today."
The article also reveals that Avary is quite the nerd, and an old one at that. Atari 800? Was there actually such a thing?
Silent Hill opens on April 21st and stars Radha Mitchell, a remarkable fit Laurie Holden, and orc-killer Sean Bean. Scenes from the movie were filmed in my living room, as evidenced below.
