Brothers Tom and Charlie Guard, known by their stylish commercials for XBox, Disneyland Paris, and Sure Deodorant, will be making their feature-length debut as directors for the remake of South Korean horror film, A Tale of Two Sisters.
The director of the original film, Ji-woon Kim, will not be involved in the remake, which will replace sisters Soo-mi and Soo-yeon by "modern-day teenage sisters Anna and Alex Rydell," according to Hollywood Reporter.
The story, based on a Korean folk tale, had been previously adapted five times before Ji-woon Kim provided his version, which appears to be the most popular. I am only familiar with this version, and had given a short review of it, here. Part of what made it work so effectively as a horror film is that there was a feeling of watching some primordial aspect of humanity. Folk tales are profoundly cultural, and so I fear that a remake, which may look very stylish and make lots of money, would lack the poignancy of the original.
Dreamworks paid $1 million USD for the rights to A Tale of Two Sisters, and production of the film is expected to begin in autumn of this year.
