300 Promo Trailer Online

UPDATE 10/5/06: Apple now has the trailer online, in HD as well as iPod formats!

iFilm has the new promo trailer for Zack Snyder's upcoming 300, starring Gerard Butler and based on Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name, which he wrote and illustrated. It depicts the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it from the perspective of King Leonidas of Sparta who, along with his 300 Spartan bodyguards and 700-man Thespian army fought off the vastly larger Persian army in one of the most famous last stands in military history. Miller was particularly inspired by the 1962 film The 300 Spartans, a movie that he watched as a young boy.

Watch the promo and see what you think. It's got a definite Gladiator/Troy feel to it, which I suspect will hurt it rather than help it at the box office, with audiences perhaps feeling that it's just more of the same.

UPDATE: Hey Nina, I found a YouTube version that still works. - Chesty

The visuals look great.

But I agree that it may seem too much like another Troy/Alexander. I think it's maybe because there are to many snippets of 'The Rousing Speech' type moments which all these films epic battle films need to include.

You could probably swap the pre battle speeches from Sparticus, Braveheart, Troy, Alexander and the LotR movies around without anybody really noticing...

Return of the King

More than Theoden's speech, I always liked Gandalf's urgings to the men in Minas Tirith... "Whatever comes through that door, you will hold your ground!" and then the doors burst open with giant cave trolls wearing armor and weilding war clubs!

Upon St. Crispin's Day!

Come on, gang. If you're going into battle with the dakr hordes of the underworld that is your enemy. You need a St. Crispin's Day speech to rouse the troops. Patton, Braveheart, heck even ID4 had a morale boosting speech.

You want your soldiers to respond,
"God's will, liege. Were you and I alone, we could take so many rabble."

No go out there and win one for the Gipper.

We're Not Watusi

Hands down, best inspirational speech of all time has to be Bill Murray in Stripes:

"We're all very different people. We're not Watusi, we're not Spartans, we're Americans. With a capital "A," huh? And you know what that means? Do you? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world! We are the wretched refuse! We're the underdog! We're mutts!"

A close second is Samuel L. Jackson's rallying of the troops right before he's swallowed by a shark in Deep Blue Sea.

That is a brilliant scene. I love the film. Did anybody ever hear of a sequel that was made?

Sequel??

I think a good sequel would just be watching Renny Harlin try and direct his way out of a paper bag.

I would pay money

To watch such a film. I'm sure Renny would make equal parts exciting and unlikely. Maybe as he tears through one layer of the bag, there is another beyond it, like an origami version of Cube.

Of course LL Cool J would just turn up at the end to save the day...

Just to put Renny in a paper bag.

i have actually invented

the Renny Harlin Escape Proof Bag... it's guaranteed to keep Rennys locked away and fresh forever... nows our chance to test it.

Movie MILF's picture
Really?

Does it have big holes in it that with arrows saying "Renny, this way OUT-->" ?

Video Offline?

Oh well... it was mediocre while it lasted.

seekshelter's picture
nope

there are no directions contained at all... its more like a sponge with millions of twists and turns with most of them being dead ends..

seekshelter's picture
i'm also working on a Uwe Boll version...

it's kinda hard to contain a black hole though...

Pulled from iFilm

Yep... it looks like it's no longer there.  Oh well.  If anyone finds it somewhere else... let us know!

this kinda reminded me...

of those old movies that they used to make on giant sets... i think this is being made on a green screen, but that look is still there...

I saw it

while it was still up and liked it alot. This looks to be like a Sin City with color. Is it taken shot for shot from the book or just the colors and some shots? I always liked the Spartans.

Easy comparisons

I think the Troy and Sin City comparisons are too easy.  Doesn't the trailer somehow feel like Dogville?  Even though these seems to be plenty of Spartans grunting, the background seem flat and the set tiny.  (and yes I know that this feature is using digital sets heavily, but so did LOTR)

The Hell You Say?

Why you think this looks like Gladiator or Troy I have no idea.

Just thought I'd bump this
